Artist Talk Reflection P14

Paul Wenham Clarke - When lives collide

During Clarkes talk about his work I found his subject matter difficult to watch/look at due to the strong attachment I already have to road traffic accidents, I quickly closed the video call and sent a message apologising for my departure. I went back a while later when I felt stronger to view his work and it made me cry, this because it brought back memories of losing someone very close to me in an RTA.

Regardless of how it made me relive the memory of that night it also made me feel grateful that here is someone who is bringing to light the tragedy that RTA's leave behind, the grieving families, the endless heartache, the never forgetting, and how there is never anything "special" about the days they happen, each day is a normal day, the skies are still, there are no storms to give warning that something so tragic is about to take place.

His work even though I do not do photography speaks volumes to me, how he captures the unspoken words and pain in people faces without the need for the showing of the families vulnerability to be on complete show. This has inspired me to tell my own story of the RTA that stole a life far too soon, I know I will struggle to begin this process and as Clarke said a project that works is one that takes years not just a few weeks of sketching/working.
