I went from working on portraits of made up people, by doing this I have been able to easily place the fundamentals of basic portraiture, which I feel is a very necessary skill to have developed if I wish to pursue portraiture.
The more I thought about the images I created it got me thinking about how they could be classed as fictional characters, because they are from my imagination and don't reference anyone in the real world, so once again I find myself creeping towards the fictional/fantastical side of art.
I'm not disheartened by this as I have come to realise it where I like my work to come from.
What I have tried to do with these images is to recreate portraits from fictional characters I have enjoyed watching and have inspired my works of fiction.
I love fanfiction and fanart, I also know there is a great deal of negativity around people who draw fanart but that isn't going to deter me, why shouldn't people be allowed to recreate images of their idols in their style without being harassed. Yes there is no money to be made in doing this but art is about fun too not just profit.
I used an A5 size image as my reference photo and remade it using graphite in A3 recycled paper. I loved doing this, I love all the little details Peter Capaldi has in his face along with the fierce look as Doctor who.
I then moved along to another Doctor who character portrayed by David Tennant as I really enjoyed the first one, I have watched the Doctor from a very young age and the more I look into fanart the more I wish to recreate my childhood heros (and my adult one obviously)
This one I struggled a little bit with but again I used an A5 print out image to create an A3 portrait of David Tennant as the Doctor, several times I had to walk away from this piece simply because I knew something was off with the composition but I just couldn't tell what it was. I took and break for a day and came back (breaks are important) and figured it out. Again the highlights in the image really bring the piece to life and I feel the shadows are in the right place to compliment his features. The mouth is a little off for my liking but all in all I do love this piece. It makes me want to continue down this route for now to see where it takes me in the future.
